National History

The year 1975 was the "Golden Year", it was then that seventeen young women came together with one goal and an immense amount of motivation. These seventeen women possessed the idea of creating an organization, a sisterhood that would acknowledge and assist with the needs of Latinas in higher education. Due to the path that our seventeen Founding Mothers paved the formation of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Incorporated was created; the First Latina Sorority in the nation.

Vision

Our Founding Mothers sought that such an organization was necessary because of two essential reasons. The first reason was the role of the Latina woman. Traditionally Latinas are categorized as the one who keeps house and cares for the children but due to the influx of Latino migration of the 70's we saw that many Latina women were defying this role and taking hold of their independence. Secondly, due to this influx, many colleges and universities started to experience large numbers of Latino students and due to this, programs and organizations were needed to cater to this new population.

When Kean University in New Jersey implemented bilingual and Latin and Caribbean Studies it gave Latina women the opportunity to gain higher education. Although Latina women advanced on one level they were still at a disadvantage in another; they were not treated equally on every level. It was then that a group of concerned women came together to discuss the creation of a Latina sorority. They wanted this organization to be involved in all aspects of the community and society as a whole. They understood that together they could make a change on both small and large levels.

Recognition

Lambda Theta Alpha was recognized by Kean University as the First Latina Sorority founded in the United States. Lambda Theta Alpha was the First to recognize the needs of Latina women and cater to them. The service to their community, the commitment to achieving higher education, and the desire to see Latina women progress served as the backbone of the organization.

Years later Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority is still going strong and upholding the values that it was founded on. It has produced educated, and motivated strong women from all walks of life. It has also contributed to the formations of other Latina sororities that have come after. Lambda Theta Alpha is and will always be a sisterhood that seeks to empower and improve all women.
